So there were some rumors about Kyoko Hikawa's manga From Far Away aka Kanata Kara would be getting an anime. Granted, the source of those rumors was a Twitter account posting "leaked news" for clout and clicks, so I didn't believe it. Then it got confirmed today on Anime News Network, an actual news site that actually bothers to source its claims. I'm not gonna lie, I'm really conflicted over this.On one hand, I am super duper happy about this. From Far Away is one of my favorite manga of all time, and one of the better female-led isekai of the 90s. I really need to re-read it at some point and give an actual review of it. On the other hand, the modern anime landscape is very different now than how it was in the 90s. These days, only children's shows get 48-52 episodes, 24-26 episode runs without breaks are rare now, and many anime don't dare go beyond 12-13 episodes anymore for a variety of reasons. Because of this, most anime adaptations try to cram multiple volumes worth of story into 12-13 episodes, often resulting in rushing through a lot of things and not giving the stories and character development any breathing room or allowing them to have any real weight or impact. I'm worried this'll happen to both From Far Away and Red River. Since they're both long shoujo manga, they'll need 48-52 episodes in order for the adaptations to do them justice, but I have a feeling they won't get that. I haven't forgotten how the anime for Tale of Outcasts got completely butchered in its piss-poor attempts to cram 8 volumes of manga into 12 episodes. I'm already leery at the director they chose for the anime, Noriyuki Abe, as I hear his attempts to adapt shoujo manga were...questionable at best. But dear God, I just really want the anime to be good! Is that so much to ask? I just want the adaptation to be good and do the story and characters justice! From Far Away deserves a high quality adaptation, as does Red River!
