In the time before the Internet existed, nerdy fandoms built communities in whatever way they could, including conventions, local clubs, mailing groups and fanzines. I won’t get into the history of fanzines here, but it is a long history and they definitely served their purpose of connecting people over shared love of something, whether that was anime or the early days of Kirk-Spock slash fiction.
